Welcome to East Van. Save On Meats sits on Hastings Street, pretty close to what is considered to be the worst part of Vancouver. The streets are not a welcoming site for most visitors to the city and to many people who live in Vancouver. The atmosphere while walking to the Save On Meats can make you lose your appetite but try and push past that and journey into the meat shop/restaurant. We saw one person shooting up while walking the streets. In general, the area is pretty safe but looks a little sketchy at times. Inside Save On Meats the atmosphere is interesting. When you walk in there is the meat section where you can buy different cuts of meat, and on the west side there is a retail section and a produce section on the right. The retail section reminded me of something from an old pre WWII store where they hold most of their products behind the counter. If you journey to the back you will see the Save On Meats Coffee Shop. This is where the food is served. The burgers are great, and an amazing deal, ranging from 3.99 to 7 dollars. The burgers are a little greasy but real tasty. You can see the chef put the ground beef on the grill, they look almost the size of a tennis ball before the chef flattens them out, the crazy thing is you get two patties in your burger as well as all the fixins. The mustard with the onions adds great flavor and makes for a real tasty meal. The bun is even toasted just like Moderne. I really like the taste of this burger and I think that it ranks among the top five for this city. The fries are fresh cut, and they taste great and are included in the price of the burger. According to the menu you can buy a steak (under 1 lb) from the meat counter and have them grill it in the back for 5 dollars more, fries and veggies included. Sounds awesome!!!!! vancouverslop@gmail.com |
